Honoring A Legacy: MainSpring Founder Marshall Micheals Retires As Ownership Passes To Tom Keller And Ray Steen

For more than 30 years, Marshall Micheals III has carried a pocket watch that reminds him what truly powers success: legacy.

That same belief—rooted in integrity, hard work, and compassion—is what led him to start what would become MainSpring, an IT strategy and consulting firm built to help people succeed in life and in business.

Now, as Marshall announces his retirement, that legacy continues with two longtime leaders: Ray Steen and Tom Keller, who have purchased the firm and will guide MainSpring into its next chapter.

Carrying The Family—And Company—Forward

Marshall founded the company in 1993 with a simple idea and a $10,000 investment from his parents. What began as a cabling business soon grew into a trusted IT strategy firm serving organizations that depend on technology to achieve their missions.

From the beginning, MainSpring’s culture was designed around people. Marshall believed in treating everyone the same—whether a CEO or a technician—because, as he often said, “everyone plays a part in the bigger picture.”

“From the start, my goal wasn’t just to build a successful business—it was to build a place where people could thrive, serve clients with integrity, and grow together,” Marshall said. “Watching Tom and Ray lead over the years, I know MainSpring is in the best possible hands. They share the same passion for people and purpose that has always driven us forward. I couldn’t be prouder of the legacy we’ve built together.”

The Next Chapter of MainSpring

Both Ray Steen and Tom Keller have deep roots within the firm and will serve as Co-Owners and CEOs.

Tom has been with MainSpring since 1999, guiding its operational excellence as President and COO. Ray joined in 2014, shaping the company’s strategic direction and growth as Chief Strategy Officer and CFO. Together, they’ve been instrumental in shaping MainSpring’s reputation for innovation, reliability, and culture.

“Marshall built more than a company—he built a community,” Tom said.

“To carry that forward and to maintain a one-of-a-kind culture is a privilege we’re excited about. “Tom and I are honored to continue that legacy,” Ray said. “Our mission remains the same: to empower clients through technology, serve with integrity, and make a meaningful impact in our communities.”

A Legacy That Keeps Time

MainSpring’s name and philosophy were inspired by the heart of every mechanical watch—the mainspring, the essential element that powers the movement.

Without it, time stops. Progress halts. The connection between people and purpose fades.

That metaphor remains at the center of MainSpring’s story. The firm’s culture, people, processes, and technology continue to serve as the driving force that helps clients stay in tune with their missions and move forward with confidence.

As Marshall begins his next chapter—spending more time with his family, coaching, and “finally finishing a few projects that have been waiting far too long”—his watch still ticks, marking the steady rhythm of a legacy that will keep powering MainSpring for generations to come.
